Nature reserve in Jönköping with fantastic animal and plant life
Save
Dumme Mosse nature reserve is one of Jönköping County's largest wetlands, home to a fantastic array of animal and plant life. The walking trails here will take you on wonderful hikes through one of southern Sweden’s last areas of wilderness. There are also trails that are accessible for wheelchairs and prams.
Dumme mosse is one of the county's largest and most varied bog areas, with many different types of wetlands and raised bogs, giving you a true feeling of wilderness. There is broad, bare bogland of various kinds, sparsely wooded fens, open moors and swamp forests. If you want to do some birdwatching, then you can visit the bird hide in Tranbo in the northern part of the reserve. In April and May you can hear the trumpet calls of the cranes, and again in autumn before their migration south.
Dumme mosse has hiking trails suitable for both summer and winter and is well adapted for outdoor activities. The boardwalk trail that is more suitable for the summer months is called the Dumme mosse trail and can be found in the southern part of the nature reserve. Along the trail there are picnic areas with tables, fireplaces, shelters and benches. Jönköping municipality does provide the barbecue areas with firewood but cannot guarantee an available supply.
You can choose how far you want to walk - the blue circular hike is 6.9 km and the yellow one is 4.6 km. The yellow hike is adapted for prams and wheelchairs. In winter, you can explore Dumme mosse on skis. The northern part of the reserve, starting from Hallbystugan, has a marked winter trail.
During spring and summer, Dumme mosse has a rich variety of bird life and you can see, among other things, golden plover, curlew, wood sandpiper and crane. Most of the area consists of bare raised bogs and among some of the plants you can find are dwarf birch, marsh labrador tea, heather and bog asphodel.
