A calm day out on the water with a good friend by your side – is there anything better? Here, we share tips on great fishing spots in and around Jönköping, along with a few things to keep in mind before you head out.
The three lakes Rocksjön, Munksjön and Vättern, surrounding Jönköping, are excellent for fishing. Close to nature, with beautiful views and a wide variety of fish species. To fish in the lakes around Jönköping, you’ll need a fishing permit (although no permit is required for Vättern). Information on where to get your permit can be found further down.

Simply search for the lake you’re interested in, enter your details, and buy your permit online. The website also provides information about boat ramps, no-fishing zones, and more.
If you’re heading outside the county, iFiske.se External link, opens in new window. is a fantastic website for purchasing fishing permits and finding other essential fishing information. They have mapped over 1,400 fishing waters across Sweden.
Beautiful Lake Vättern offers fantastic opportunities for fishing and outdoor adventures. It is one of Sweden’s most unique fishing areas, with an impressive variety of 31 different fish species.
Among the catches you might reel in are salmon, char, trout, grayling, pike, perch, and zander. The southern part of the lake is deep, home mainly to salmon, char, and trout, while the northern part features Vättern’s scenic archipelago, rich in pike, perch, zander, and whitefish.
Vättern boasts a stunning shoreline of 642 km, with sandy beaches, cliffs, and rocky shores that offer breathtaking views all year round! No fishing license is required here, but note that certain protected areas and military zones around the lake are off-limits. Boat ramps close to Jönköping can be found in Huskvarna Harbour and Domsand Harbour in Bankeryd.

Both Munksjön and Rocksjön offer great opportunities for sport fishing. These lakes are located right in the centre of Jönköping and fishing here is free of charge. However, you do need a fishing permit, which you can download via this link. The permit must be printed and brought with you when fishing.

Munksjön is home to a wide range of fish species, with perch, pike, bream, and roach being the most common. Smaller populations of zander, eel, and grayling also live in the lake, but targeted fishing for these species is not allowed. If caught, they must immediately be released back into the water.
Fishing is easy from land along the 5 km walking path that surrounds the lake. If you prefer fishing from a boat, there is a free boat ramp at Jönköping Sport Fishing Club on Klubbhusgatan 5. Note that the speed limit on the lake is 12 knots, and 5 knots in the harbour canal.
Scenic Rocksjön is known not only for its rich birdlife but also for its diversity of fish species. The lake is especially popular for coarse fishing, offering large bream, elusive crucian carp, and the striking tench. Perch and pike are also plentiful. Fishing is easiest from the northern and western shores, while the rest of the shoreline is dominated by reeds and wetlands.
If you want to launch a boat, there is a simple gravel ramp at the canoe stadium. Please note that Rocksjön is part of a nature reserve, and only electric motors are allowed. Rowing is also a great option – it’s healthy, quiet, and kind to the lake’s wildlife!
The area around Gränna offers plenty of beautiful fishing waters close at hand. Down by Gränna harbour you might find perch and other coarse fish swimming in – so why not try your luck with a small jig or worm while waiting for the ferry?
If you’re willing to travel just a few kilometres, the Bunn lakes (three lakes divided into two fishing areas) are a great option. There are two boat ramps available, one in North Bunn and one in South Bunn. South Bunn requires a different fishing permit than North and Middle Bunn, so make sure you get the correct one before heading out. Fishing is free for children and young people up to the age of 17.
Nearby, you’ll also find Lake Ören, Lake Landsjön, and the old mill ponds, all offering excellent fishing. The shoreline of Lake Ören is dominated by dramatic cliffs and rocky outcrops, though sandy and clay shores can be found at the northern end. The lake is rich in species, including more unusual ones like Arctic char, bullhead, and stone loach, alongside common catches such as perch, pike, and roach. A boat ramp is available on the southern shore, just north of Lilla Hultrum.
Landsjön, located right next to Kaxholmen, is famous for its pike fishing and the beautiful rolling farmland surrounding the lake. Here you can also catch perch, crucian carp, and zander. Fishing is allowed from 1 June to 30 September with a summer permit, and from 1 December to 31 March with a winter permit. Both Lake Bunn and Lake Ören also offer enchanting boat tours through John Bauer–inspired landscapes, complete with guided tours on the water.
Before or after your fishing adventure, make sure to stop by some of the many cosy cafés and farm shops nearby – such as Rudenstams Opens in new window., Kaffestugan Opens in new window., Ravelsmarks farm shop, and many more. If you’re feeling hungrier, you’ll also find a wide selection of restaurants right by the harbour in Gränna, all within easy reach of the lakes mentioned above.
In Bottnaryd, you’ll find several great fishing waters surrounded by classic Småland nature. In the dark forest lakes Mulserydssjön, Stråken and Svansjön, you can catch large perch and pike, but also whitefish such as roach, tench and bream. In Mulserydssjön, there is a simple gravel ramp at the eastern end of the lake. In Stråken, there are three boat ramps: one in the southern part near Ärnabo, one in the middle near Väster Kärr, and one a little further north near Nykyrka. In Mörtsjön, Skräcklagölen and Gårdsjön, the local village association offers rainbow trout fishing. Fishing permits for these lakes can be found here.
In the northern part of the Nissan river, fishing is currently prohibited to protect the trout population.
In Bankeryd, you’ll find the urban lake Attarpsdammen, well-known for its whitefish fishing. Here you can catch species such as tench, bream, roach, perch and pike, and there is also a smaller population of trout in the lake.
The lake is owned by Jönköping’s Sport Fishing Club and fishing permits can be purchased via Swish. The number is 123-604 67 75 and the cost is 50 SEK per day.
Fishing is only allowed from the shore. Please note that fishing is prohibited on the western side, from the dam wall and about halfway along the shore. Signs are posted by the lake. This is to protect the rich birdlife and the surrounding nature.
North of Lekeryd, you’ll find the scenic and species-rich lakes Ramsjön, Stora Nätaren and Ylen – lakes that have produced many record catches in Sweden over the years.
RamsjönRamsjön is the smallest of the three lakes and is located in a very hilly part of Småland. With Uvaberget Nature Reserve right next door and incredible perch fishing, you can have a fantastic day out on the water.The lake also holds a good population of pike and zander, but also rarer species such as whitefish, burbot and tench.There is a boat ramp on the western side of the lake just below Uvaberget. YlenLake Ylen is famous for its excellent zander fishing but also has good stocks of tench, bream, burbot and pike.There are two boat ramps – one in the western part (quite rocky at low water, so be careful) and one in the northern part. Stora NätarenStora Nätaren is also known for its great zander fishing and is considered one of Sweden’s best zander lakes. It has roughly the same fish population as Ramsjön and Ylen, including perch, pike, zander, bream, tench, whitefish and crucian carp.Fishing permits are available at iFiske.se. In Taberg, there are many lakes and waterways around Tabergsådalen where you can go fishing. While you’re there, you can also hike up Tabergstoppen and perhaps finish off with a shrimp sandwich or a round of mini golf.
The lakes around Taberg are Åsasjön, Tahesjön, Granarpssjön, Lovsjön, Månsarpasjön and Eckern. The lakes hold similar fish populations, with plenty of perch, pike, rudd, tench, and a smaller stock of zander in Eckern.
The Taberg River is one of Jönköping’s most important spawning grounds for trout and grayling, but also contains brook trout, perch and pike. Fishing is only permitted between April 15 and September 15 to protect spawning fish. Note that only fly fishing is allowed in flowing sections of the river.
In Tenhult, you’ll find two lakes – Tenhultasjön and Rogbergasjön – which differ in both appearance and fish species.
RogbergasjönRogbergasjön is a beautiful fishing lake with many islands, reeds and water lilies along the shoreline. It’s the perfect lake to catch your first tench, which are abundant here. The best tip is to be very quiet and fish with a worm or corn just above or on the bottom. The lake also holds perch, pike and roach.There is a boat ramp at the northern end of the lake, opposite the bathing area at Riddersberg. TenhultasjönTenhultasjön lies just south of Tenhult and is a popular sport fishing lake. It is relatively nutrient-poor with a maximum depth of 30 meters. Here you can fish for zander, perch and pike, but also whitefish such as bream, crucian carp and roach.While visiting the lake, you can also explore Uvaberget Nature Reserve at the southern end, known for its steep cliffs and striking natural beauty.Fishing permits are available at iFiske.se External link, opens in new window..
