Grännaberget Open-Air Museum

On Grännaberget, with its stunning views of lake Vättern and Visingsö, lies the Grännaberget Open-Air Museum. A visit here is perfect for those interested in exploring the local history of Gränna. The site features buildings from various time periods in a charming setting.

Start your adventure by climbing the 243 steps from Södra Parken in Gränna to reach Grännaberget. The views along the stairs are incredible, but you can also access the area by car or bicycle.

History of the open-air museum

Established in 1912, the museum is Gränna’s first cultural heritage site. Initially, it served as a city park for the residents of Gränna, but from 1916, additional buildings were relocated to the site. Inspired by Skansen in Stockholm, the idea was to preserve endangered structures by moving them here.

Notable buildings include:

  • A captain’s residence from the 1600s
  • A soldier’s cottage
  • A paper master’s residence from Röttle
  • Market stalls
  • Storage sheds
  • A wagon depot

Today, the museum is managed by the Grenna Museum Foundation. The cottages are open during the same hours as Kaffestugan from May to September. Admission to Grännaberget Open-Air Museum is free.

Kaffestugan Grännaberget

Coffee has been served at Kaffestugan on Grännaberget since 1924. Their shrimp sandwiches are said to be famous far beyond the borders of Småland.

Outdoor activities

Close to the museum, you’ll find a variety of outdoor activities, including:

  • Marked exercise trails
  • Illuminated jogging paths
  • Outdoor gym
  • MTB trails
  • Pump track
  • Grill areas
  • Toilets

Oscarshöjd lookout point

A short walk away is Oscarshöjd, previously known as Kyrkbacken, renamed after King Oscar II’s visit in 1895. The site features a commemorative stone from Gränna’s 300th anniversary and another stone with King Oscar II’s signature.
