The beloved Remmalag tours have been a tradition for over a century, taking visitors on scenic journeys across the island while learning about its fascinating history. Enjoy the rhythmic clip-clop of hooves and soak in the serene atmosphere. Perfect for all ages, this activity is both relaxing and educational.
There are several tours to choose from.
This tour runs regularly throughout the summer, starting from the harbour and heading north past the island’s center and the northern burial ground. The carriage pauses at Kumlaby Church, a historic gem from the 12th century.
At the church, you can climb the tall observation tower. On clear days, you might spot four provinces: Småland, Östergötland, Närke, and Västergötland. Inside, you’ll find a well-preserved church interior with beautiful frescoes from the 15th and 17th centuries. During the stop, refreshments like coffee or ice cream are available. The carriage then heads south, returning to the harbor. The driver provides fascinating commentary about the island’s history throughout the journey.
This tour also runs regularly during the summer, starting at the harbour and heading south along one of Sweden’s most beautiful gravel roads. The route passes through the famous oak forest and rolling fields of Visingsö. Your guide will share intriguing insights about the island’s past and present.
Longer tours, such as the Haga Tour and Näs Tour, are available upon request. The Remmalag does not operate on a fixed schedule but typically aligns with ferry arrivals. From the ferry dock, it’s a short 200-meter walk straight ahead and up the stairs. For large groups, advance booking is recommended.
Visingsö Remmalag operates during the summer season:

The Remmalag tradition began in the late 1800s when steamship companies introduced leisure trips to Visingsö. The concept of this unique mode of transport is said to have originated from Russian prisoners of war stationed on the island during the 18th century.
The origin of the name is uncertain, but one theory is that "remma" refers to the straps (remmar) attaching the horses to the carriage, and "lag" (old Swedish) means a flatbed wagon
Take the ferry from Gränna to Visingsö, a gem in Lake Vättern with stunning nature and a rich history tied to the powerful Brahe family. Don’t miss Brahe Church, home to a wealth of artistic treasures. The island is easy to explore by bike or by horse-drawn carriage – remmalag. Here, you're close to nature and can meet alpacas, go horseback riding, or paddle a kayak.
