Hakarps church

Hakarp Church is a pink cruciform church built in 1694 that has been designated a a church worth seeing. Two churches have been incorporated within the stone church: a stave church erected during the middle of the 12th century and a wood church constructed about 1283.

The church and churchyard are located in the hills east of central Huskvarna and are surrounded by a landscape made up of forests and fields. The current stone church was built in 1693-1694 in the same place that a medieval wooden church previously stood. The new church was built outside the old one, which thereby could be used as a place of worship while construction proceeded, and parts of the medieval timber have been reused in the tower, roof and floor construction.

The stone church is designed as a Greek cross, with the sacristy in the attached northeastern corner. Architect Erik Dahlberg probably was responsible for the design. The roof, tower and gable roof trusses are shingled and the facade is smoothly plastered and a pale pink. In 1994 the western part of the church was expanded to provide more space for the congregation and storage.

No visitor to the church can help notice the extensive and imaginative paintings decorating the ceiling.
