Hiking trail between Huskvarna and Gränna with fantastic views of lake Vättern
Save
Walk along the most beautiful route between Huskvarna and Gränna - the John Bauerleden. A popular hiking trail of almost six miles through a varied landscape of Småland forests, lakes and farmland. The trail offers several vantage points with fantastic views of lake Vättern and lake Landsjön.
The John Bauerleden trail is about 58 kilometres long and is one of three Småland trails that run through Jönköping municipality. The other two are Holavedsleden and Södra Vätterleden. The trails all share the orange colour trail markings, and all have rest areas with shelters. John Bauerleden connects to various other trails: in the south to the Södra Vätterleden trail and in the north to the Holavedsleden trail and to the Västanåleden trail south of Gränna.
John Bauerleden is named after the well-known Jönköping artist John Bauer, famous for his magical motifs and fairytale-like interpretations of Swedish nature. Along the trail, you will soon realise that it is precisely from here that John Bauer got his inspiration. This makes the walk here even more magical.
You will pass by many interesting old buildings along the trail. Near Gränna is Röttle village, where you will find Jerusalem Mill from the 13th century. It is one of the country's oldest non-ecclesiastical buildings. There is also Rasmus Mill from the 17th century, which is still in operation.
If you're hiking John Bauerleden and looking for a place to stay, Bauergården in Bunn offers hotel rooms, cabins and camping pitches.
A couple of days in Gränna holds everything you could wish for during your holiday. Stunningly clear water, breathtaking views, gentle walks in magical forests, history, cycling along beautiful country roads or challenging MTB tracks, relaxing to magical sunsets, strolls down cobblestone alleys, deliciously good ice cream and of course – the pepparmint rock candy.
Gazing out over Lake Vättern, the giant Vist stands tall in Huskvarna. Here, striking contrasts meet — between stunning natural surroundings and the historic Husqvarna Factory, established in 1689 to produce weapons for the Swedish military. At the Husqvarna Museum, you can explore everything from sewing machines and motorcycles to modern-day chainsaws and lawnmowers. Nearby, Smedbyn offers a charming mix of history, art galleries, and craft studios. Since 1925, Huskvarna Folkets Park has been a beloved venue for music, theatre, festivals, and fairs.
John Bauerleden runs between Huskvarna and Gränna. You start your hike at the IKHP clubhouse on Huskvarnaberget and walk to Grännaberget (or vice versa). If you want to extend the distance from Grännaberget, you can continue to Tegnértornet tower. Here you finish the hike 350 metres above sea level, with a unique view of the four different regions that surround Lake Vättern.
By car
Whether you start your hike at the IKHP clubhouse next to Huskvarnabergets nature reserve or at Grännaberget, there are plenty of parking spaces.
Public transport
If you travel by public transport, you can take regional bus 121, which runs between Gränna harbour and Jönköping’s travel centre, and join the trail at Brunstorp, the stop is called Brunstorps gård.
